In Bridging the Gap from Rehab to Performance, physical therapist Sue Falsone walks the reader through the thought process and physical practice of guiding an injured athlete from injury through rehab and back to the field of play. To both health care professionals and strength and conditioning experts alike, she describes the path as her athletes move through pain and healing toward optimal function and advanced performance.Along the way, she'll teach you some of the nuances of modern pain science, healing and motor control. Once her athletes move past the rehabilitation stage, she plans an extensive return-to-play timeline, and in this book, she'll show you examples of how to create a successful timeline for yourself. As part of the return-to-play plan, she moves from fundamental performance to fundamental advancement and finally, to advanced performance.Whether you're a clinician, a strength or skills coach or a personal trainer, you owe it to your patients and clients to understand Sue Falsone's system of Bridging the Gap from Rehab to Performance.“Sue always makes me think. Sometimes her thinking is so far ahead of me, it takes me a year to catch up. Want to get smarter? Read her book!” ~ Mike BoyleFrom Sue to her Bridging the Gap readers: When an athlete is injured, where does rehabilitation end and performance training begin? Is there a line the athlete surpasses that switches us from the medical model to the performance model?Of course not.The process is a continuum that takes an injured athlete from the table back to the field. The process encompasses a multitude of healthcare and sport performance professionals working in the best interest of the patient. An organizational system of progressing an athlete from injury back to sport performance is necessary to ensure no steps are missed. No part of the return-to-play process is more important than the others. All parts of the system must be addressed, at varying times, to create an athlete-centered and comprehensive program.Everything from pain reduction to biomechanics, to the sensorimotor system, to psychology, to strength training, and forward to athletic movement needs to be considered. There is no single way to accomplish the task of returning to sport, but you need an organizational system to ensure nothing is overlooked. That is why I wrote Bridging the Gap from Rehab to Performance. It is my intent to provide the fields of sports rehabilitation and sports performance with a comprehensive organizational system where “everything has its place” and every professional is welcome. This book isn’t a cookbook of exactly how to return a player to sport. It’s an organizational guide that will help you make appropriate decisions based on available evidence, patient values, and personal expertise and experience. And we do it all with the athlete’s best interest at its core. Leave your letters at the door. Let’s bridge the gap between professions; let’s bridge the gap between professionals; and let’s Bridge the Gap from Rehab to Performance.~ Sue Falsone

The reason your reading this Amazon review is to decide you should pull the trigger on this book. I think two primary groups will benefit most from this book. One is an athlete looking to guide a holistic approach to returning from an injury with the various medical specialist that she/he is working with. The other is someone working with athletes in a coaching or health specialist role wanting to have a better understanding of coordinating the process of recovering from an injury with others for athletes he/she is working with.I’m a strength and conditioning coach and also an active baseball, softball umpire and football referee so not only am I working with people with injuries I’m also dealing with recovering from my injuries while trying to chase robust younger athletes around an athletic field which is why I gravitated towards this book.Bridging the Gap from Rehab to Performance is about the athletic rehabilitation process. There’s not a lot of books that I am aware that holistically focus on having an injury and cover the full process of getting back to performance in a sports activity. That’s the magic of this book; sports rehab traditionally has been a specialized area. This book takes a holistic approach allowing cooperation of many different people including physical therapists, athletic trainers, chiropractors, yoga instructors, strength & conditioning coaches, and team or individual sports coaches and leverages their unique strengths. One of the problems that I see with many athletes as they rely on one or two people to guide them through the whole process of returning from an injury. For example, going to an orthopedic surgeon and then a physical therapist for the entire recovery process. Another example; a physical therapist and not working with an athletes regular strength coach until cleared to come back to participate in practice etc. This book does an excellent job of looking at rehab from a coordinated approach. To quote Sue in her book:“In today’s world, the roles of health care specialists are changing, with overlapping education, specialties, and duties based on education and workplace. No single profession owns any specific technique and skills often overlap between professions.......... Where does rehabilitation end and performance training begin? Can this precise point be defined? “Looking at rehab from a coordinated approach gives the athlete a roadmap to recovery working with many different people bring different tools and perspectives to the process.Sue shares from personal and direct experience a set of tools she found very helpful for someone who has an injury to return to activity. The diagrams in the book are both clear and attractive. The descriptions are also easy to grasp for somebody interested in the topic to someone with a more advanced background. If you’re looking for a magic bullet book that’s going to give you that one or two things to recover from an injury you will be disappointed, but if you want a practical book that takes you through the process of suffering an injury and the road back to doing whatever activity is important to you or an athlete that you’re working with I think that this book is a very valuable resource.
